Experts at the Karolinska Institute (Sweden) tracked 80,000 healthy people, including men and women, from 1997 to 2005. Information about their eating habits is kept carefully.
After 8 years, 131 people had pancreatic cancer. When interviewed, these people said they regularly use carbonated drinks or syrup and sweet food.
Follow-up results show that people who use carbonated drinks or syrup have a higher risk of pancreatic cancer than those who never drink about 90%. The risk of getting sick in people who add sugar to food or drinks is at least 5 times a day 70% higher than those who rarely do so.
The culprit of pancreatic cancer is a disorder in glucose metabolism, causing the pancreas to produce too much insulin.
Researchers added that eating a lot of sugar is also one of the factors that increases insulin levels in the body.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly diseases because it is often discovered when it's too late. Surgery only offers little chance of survival. In many cases, when surgery, the patient knows that the cancer has spread.
"This is probably the most dangerous form of cancer, because it's difficult to detect and treat it. Therefore, we need to know how to prevent this disease." Susanna Larsson, a member of the research group. save, speak.
The study was published in the November issue of Clinical Nutrition Magazine (USA).
