Large gills have been known to scientists since 1994 and are only found in the Truong Son mountain range, which borders Laos and Vietnam.

Currently the research teams are continuing to expand the area of ​​biodiversity survey by camera trapping, which includes places with high biodiversity potential in Thua Thien Hue province and the northern part of Quang Nam province.
