"I am sure the fish belongs to the Aphyonid family . This is the first time a fish of this family was caught while alive," said Bruce Mundy, a fisherman at the US National Fisheries Service (NOAA).

Mundy said the Aphyonidae family of Ophidiiformes includes creatures like Cusk eel. Previous scientists only discovered their corpses after being brought to the surface by deep-sea fishing vessels or mud dredgers.

The research team on Okeanos Explorer is conducting deep-water surveys at the Mariana Trench Marine Reserve and several northern Mariana Islands. The expedition lasted until July 10.
