'Search giant' Google will shake hands with six other partners to form an alliance to implement an undersea fiber optic project to increase the capacity of Internet connections between Asia and the US.
Six of Google's partners in this project include Bharti Airtel, Global Transit, KDDI, Pacnet and SingTel. The project has an initial level of up to 300 million USD and is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2010.
The fiber optic cable will create a connection to Chikura - a location located on the coast of Tokyo - with the city of Los Angeles (USA). It is expected that the operating bandwidth of the fiber optic cable will reach about 7.68 terabits seconds, contributing to a 20% increase in bandwidth connection between Asia and America.
Information about Google's investment in submarine fiber construction began to appear in the press from the end of last year. But at that time Google refused to confirm information about this project. Some experts believe that Google will buy lines from telecom firms instead of investing in new construction. However, the reality was completely different from the forecast.
This is not the first time Google has joined a telecommunications project. Earlier, the search giant has been participating in the mobile broadband auction of the US Federal Telecommunications Commission (FCC) in search of the possibility of developing a mobile phone network. Information about this auction has not yet been confirmed because the FCC has not disclosed a list of firms participating in the auction.
