From the mushroom mixture, the two inventors created lampshades and chairs.
Designers Sebastian Cox and Ninela Ivanova in London, England, came up with the idea of mixing mycelium mycelium with wood chips to create a mushroomed material . "The material is then shredded into the mold for re-development into the desired shape , " Cox explains.
"By understanding the growth characteristics of the fungus, we can determine when to stop the process in order to preserve the shape and texture of the product before it is dried," Ivanova added.
From the mushroom mixture , the two inventors created lampshades and chairs. After several experiments, they found that the hyphae grows particularly well on two types of wood that are generally considered of no economic value in the UK.
Their immediate challenge is to persuade people to use products made from 100% organic material in environmentally friendly production processes.
