A study found that chewing gum can help patients recover faster after bowel surgery. Now doctors can prescribe patients to use chewing gum.
If the patient chews candy for 30 minutes in the morning, noon and evening, chewing activity creates stomach hormones. Accordingly, the intestine is stimulated, allowing the patient to continue eating normally.
The Sun newspaper reported that nurse consultant Harriet Wright led a six-month study on 67 patients with intestinal diseases at Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester.
She said: 'Normal-care patients have been discharged after surgery 4 to 5 days.'
But those who chew gum have been discharged earlier than the average of 1 to 2 days. Gum helps patients recover better and discharge earlier.
