Implement renovation and restoration of Tam hoa plum varieties

The project of revitalizing Tam Hoa plum variety implemented by Lao Cai Agriculture and Forestry Seed Center in coordination with the People's Committee of Bac Ha district has been implemented since early March.

According to the project, Bac Ha will grow 150ha Tam Hoa plum with cuttings, extracted from healthy trees, to restore old and wide-spread old trees but low productivity and yield, small fruits and poor quality.

Earlier in the winter, before plum trees blossomed, gardeners were also instructed to cut them by technicians, creating a canopy of 53ha of plums. So far, the whole area has flowered, the results are very uniform, promising a bumper season.

Bac Ha currently has 700 ha of Tam Hoa plum, reducing 70% of the area compared to the peak development period of 3,000ha (in 2000), the main reason that people cut down after many years of this tree was not interested in improving. create, yield, low quality fruit, sell at no price.

In 2010, in the socio-economic development orientation of the district built by the district Party Committee, plum trees were still selected as one of the key spearhead plants to help farmers develop production. However, the development of plum trees will not be in the direction of extensive farming as before, but in intensive cultivation to increase productivity, improve quality to enhance economic value on land area unit.

With that motto, Bac Ha set the goal of intensive cultivation from 500 to 700 ha of plum. Area left to plant other trees.

According to Ms. Tong Ngoc Mai - Head of the Agricultural Extension Station of Bac Ha district, if she has intensive farming to take care of the technique, 700ha plum, equivalent to 24,000 trees, on average, each tree has from 1.2 to 1.5 quintals, However, Bac Ha still achieves the output of 4,000 tons / crop or more.

In fact, proven in 2009-2010, some households applied the pilot cutting program to create a canopy such as Ms Nong Thi Phuong in Sin Chai A village, participating in improving tam hoa plum by cutting pruning method in large numbers. most trees (50 trees).

Ms. Phuong said that thanks to this project, the trees have been improved to yield, fruit quality and economic efficiency. Through harvesting 50 improved trees, Ms. Phuong said that each tree has a yield of 1.2-1.3 tons of fresh fruits, a total of over 30 million VND interest.

If from now to 2015, the whole area of ​​700 ha of Bac Ha plum will be planted and cared for according to the new method, each year this district will maintain the output of plum to 4,000 to 5,000 tons of fruits. With the price of 7,000 VND to 10,000 VND / kg, plum trees will bring income to Bac Ha farmers every year from 15 billion VND to 20 billion VND.
