Losing the lawsuit, Microsoft lost $ 1.5 billion

The US federal court ruled that Microsoft must pay $ 1.5 billion to Alcatel-Lucent for violating its patent rights.

On February 22, the world's number one software company confirmed this failure. This is the first failure in a series of 6 lawsuits related to copyright issues between Microsoft and the leading French telecommunications equipment manufacturer.

The lawsuit concerns a patent-pending technology that converts digital music formats into MP3 formats that are being used on personal computers.

In 2003 Alcatel-Lucent sued Gateway and Dell for violating a total of 15 licenses. Soon after, Microsoft had to agree to take the two of the PC makers in place as a defendant because most of the sued technology copyrights were primarily used in Windows.

Microsoft said the court dismissed two of Alcatel-Lucent's lawsuit records. 6 other cases are currently under review and given a first instance trial.

Commenting on the court's ruling, head of Microsoft's attorney Tom Burt affirmed: " We think the above ruling of the court is completely inconsistent with law and reality. The fine is one.
