Instead of creating documents on the web and storing them on your hard drive, with Office Windows Live, users can choose to install office programs to store documents on the web. Although it does not allow editing web documents like Zoho and Google Docs, this service allows you to store documents directly on the web from installed office programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. It also allows you to review documents online.

To use the service, you need a Windows Live ID account, and can create multiple Workspace at the same time for groups you want to collaborate with. Then you just need to send an invitation to the members to be able to share documents with them. Group members can be editors or viewers. File locking is the same as in Microsoft Office, with the usual options such as 'Onpen as read only', if the file exists and save the file under a different name. An Office Live toolbar installed on the Office application allows users to choose to save or open documents from any shared Workspace.

Microsoft says the maximum capacity for each account is 500MB, corresponding to thousands of files, or more, depending on size. This service can run on Internet Explorer version 6.0 or newer on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Vista; or Firefox 2.0 on Mac OS X version 10.2.x or later.
