More than 90 people died from lightning strikes in India for two days

Most victims are women and children, they are struck by lightning while working in the fields or on the road.

North and eastern India are experiencing heavy rain due to monsoon phenomenon in the past two days, according to Mashable. The place where the most accidents are caused by lightning is the eastern state of Bihar with 56 people killed, 24 injured. Local authorities had to issue a notice asking people to stay away from empty areas when there was thunderstorm and to pay money to support families whose relatives were struck by lightning.

In total, 93 people died from lightning. In addition to Bihar state, other states such as Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh are also struck by lightning or injured.

According to Indian statistics, lightning strikes are a normal phenomenon in the rainy season from June to October. However, the number of people struck by lightning in the past two days is "very unusual".

Data from 2005 show that India averages 2,000 deaths each year due to lightning strikes. The number of deaths due to lightning strikes was highest in 2014 with 2,582 people, most of them were in rural areas. Among natural disasters, lightning causes the most deaths in India.
