New positioning system and satellite space shooting

Scientists at the University of Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M, Spain) have developed a new system that automatically locates and captures space satellites, based on robotic technology and computer vision.


In this project, using an ARISOV space vehicle, researchers have developed an algorithm that automatically locates and photographs a defective satellite.

The highlight of this system is that all instructions and commands are automatically set up to allow satellites to be programmed for the future, to service other satellites, or to extend the life of the satellite. Navigation algorithms, based on vision technology, help predict location and direction.

UC3M researchers are currently in contact with a Spanish company to collaborate on the idea of extending the life of communications satellites to 12 years in space.
