People with blood type O are more likely to die when injured

O-type people are more likely to be at risk of serious injury due to blood clotting, resulting in more blood loss.

According to the Telegraph, data from 901 emergency patients in Japan showed that the O-fatal mortality rate was 28%. Meanwhile, the mortality rate in other blood groups is only 11%.

"Recent studies show that blood type O may be a factor, a potential risk of bleeding," said Dr. Wataru Takayama, from Tokyo University of Medicine and Dental Hospital.

Blood loss is the leading cause of death in serious injuries. But very few studies focused on the relationship between blood type and traumatic death. "We want to test this relationship," said Dr. Takayama.

Scientists found a blood coagulant-causing agent O had a lower concentration than other blood groups. It is the von Willebrand factor , which has the function of helping to coagulate when injured. This condition makes blood O people more bleeding and increases the risk of death when there are serious injuries.

Blood type is usually classified by relying on a protein on the surface of red blood cells. Common major blood types are A, B, AB and O. In the UK, about 47% of the population has O blood, making O blood the most popular blood group in the country.

Blood O is a blood type that can be transmitted to other blood groups. Blood type A can only be transmitted to people with blood type A or AB. People with group B blood can only give blood to people of the same blood type or group AB. A person with AB blood can only give blood to a group member.

Research results show that doctors need to be more urgent when emergency blood transfusions for severely injured O blood patients. They are more likely to die from blood loss than usual, Dr. Takayama added.

The study is published in Critical Care magazine.
