Source: Engadget The selection of the winning bidder is the first step, before the city government works specifically with Google to discuss the details of the project today.
Speaking before this victory, Google proved very happy. The decision of the company to shake hands with Earthlink just before the final round of bidding was not wasteful. The alliance between the two goods proved to be superior to the rest of the competitors.
San Francisco officials say they hope the city will become a giant wireless hotspot by the end of the year. In this bid, all the capital allocated to the project was taken from the budget of Google and Earthlink, and the city government did not have to pocket any money.
In return, Google hopes to recover its capital and seek profits from online advertising, while Earthlink hopes to charge more for users wishing to use a faster Internet connection.
Under the agreement, San Francisco will accept Google and Earthlink to take advantage of the city's public and high-altitude locations to install antennas and necessary equipment. Earlier, Google also expressed its desire to provide free wireless network service in Silicon Valley, where the firm's headquarters is located.
