Since January 2007, Lion Island will promote the project to provide free wireless Internet in all public places.

Called Wireless @ SG, this initiative has just been announced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during the 25th anniversary of telecommunications and information achievements. The free period will be extended for the first 2 years of coverage.

Three iCELL, QMAX Communications and SingTel networks have been assigned to the project. They will "split" the island nation into three regions and complete their deployment by the end of September next year.

" So just with a laptop or PDA, you can enjoy high-speed Internet connection, IM chat, email checking and even making VoIP calls ," Lee Lee Long said.

The Singapore government hopes this plan will help the broadband market grow from the current 50,000 users to five times over the next two years and create more jobs.
