New Zealand's National Water and Atmospheric Research Institute (NIWA) has announced the discovery of strange creatures in the Kermadec trench area in the northern sea of this country, National Geographic magazine reported.
NIWA researchers conducted a three-week expedition at a depth of 700-1,500 meters in four different marine habitats from hydrothermal vents to volcanoes under the sea, continental slope and both undersea canyons within about 10,000km 2 of Kermadec trench.
According to niwa.co.nz, there are about 50 undersea volcanoes stretching along the Kermadec trench. It is an important feature in the Western Pacific Ocean, stretching nearly 1,500 km to the edge of New Zealand's exclusive economic zone - located in the northeast of the Kermadec Islands.
And the hydrothermal vents - located next to undersea volcanoes often spew out water that is heated by geothermal. This shelter of many complex organisms is nourished by soluble chemicals in this water.
Polychaete seaworms are found at 1,200m depth, the northern New Zealand waters.
'This marine survey is interesting when we discover exotic species during underwater filming and collect biological samples at Tangaroa hydrothermal vents as well as in other trench habitats. Kermadec, ' said biologist Malcolm Clark, who led the study.
The team has collected thousands of samples of organisms, of which about 10% are believed to be new species for scientific or recently discovered in New Zealand.
'Overall, we found that biologic communities and biodiversity at the four marine habitats above are different, ' Dr. Clark said via email to National Geographic. Mr. Clark revealed that the purpose of the expedition was: "to know which marine creatures live there and from here to study how vulnerable they are from human activities such as fishing or mining. oceanic minerals'.
Here are the strange creatures discovered in the Kermadec trench area, New Zealand waters:
Uroptychus shrimp, living at depths from 650m - 1,400m.
Yellow 'starfish' Asteroschema bidwillae at 1,220m depth.
A species of squid at a depth of 900m.
Shaggy Trichopeltarion janetae at 900m depth.
Stephanocyathus platypus cup shape coral at a depth of 1,000m.
Atolla deep sea jellyfish lives at a depth of 1,500m.
Idiacanthus black arowana.
A new sea slug species at a depth of 1,250m.
