Sun completed the design of new multi-core chips

Sun Microsystems has just completed the design

Sun Microsystems has just completed the design of " Victoria Falls ", the code name for the Niagara 2 server version with two multi-core chips, expected to be released in the first half of 2008.

The Niagara 2's oldest brother is an 8-core chip version - UltraSparc T1, which Sun sold a year ago. This chip version is the "first child" in Sun's multi-core chip development strategy.

Sun said the sequence of increasing performance of Niagara versions compared to the UltraSparc IIIi chip is as follows: the first Niagara version has 14 times higher performance; Niagara 2 (single core) is 35 times higher; and Victoria Falls (multi-core) 65 times high.

Niagara 2 can execute 8 sequences on each core, totaling 64 scripts / 8 core chips. This means that for each 1.75-inch Sun server, Victoria Falls can execute 128 scripts simultaneously.

While Niagara emphasizes the ability to execute and many scripts, the design of Sun's high-end chip "Rock", which integrates 16 cores, is expected to be announced in the second half of 2008, again executing. individual scripts but at a much faster rate. Sun has not yet said how many scripts each "Rock" can handle.
