The first person set foot on the moon died

Astronaut Neil Armstrong, who first set foot on the moon, died at age 82. Armstrong's family announced he had died of complications from a heart surgery in early August, the BBC reported.

Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969 as commander of Apollo 11. He described the event with a famous quote: "This is a short step of a human being, but is a jump for humanity ". More than 500 million people across the planet monitor his moon landing process through television. Then he and astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin walked on the moon for almost 3 hours. They took soil and rock samples, conducted experiments and took photos.

"The sight on the moon is great, far beyond all the experiences I've ever known," Armstrong commented on his moon landing.

US President calls Armstrong one of America's greatest heroes.

"He is not only a hero in our time, but also a hero of all time," Mr. Obama said.

In November last year, Armstrong was awarded the congressional gold medal, America's highest award for citizens.
