Lulin, the name of the comet, gives off an eerie green light and is visible to the naked eye, discovered more than a year ago and moving into the solar system. Lulin will come closest to Earth on February 24, when it is nearly 60 million kilometers from the green planet.

The green light of Lulin comes from the clumps of gas that make up its atmosphere. The gas dust escaping from the Lulin core contains cyanogen (a toxic gas that exists in many comets) and two atoms carbon (C 2 ). Both of these substances emit a green light when exposed to sunlight in a space that is close to a vacuum.

Jack Newton, astronomer in Arizona, USA took a picture of Lulin a few days ago. He said: 'My eyes could not see the comet because it was too tired, but the 14-inch telescope helped me discover it on February 1.

A NASA spokesperson added: 'Lulin will come closest to Earth on February 24, 2009. It appeared a few hours before sunrise. The dark sky in the countryside is the most necessary condition to observe this comet. However, no one is sure we can see it with the naked eye because this is the first time Lulin visited the solar system and exposed to strong light. Upcoming developments may surprise us. "

Lulin was first discovered in July 2007 by Quanzhi Ye, a Chinese hydro-meteorological student. He took a picture of it at the Lulin Observatory in Taiwan, so Quanzhi called this comet by the observatory's name.
