A clip recorded by an eyewitness shows the moment the mountain began to erupt, sending ash billowing into the sky.

Then a giant ring of smoke was seen on top of the volcano, just like a scene from an apocalyptic movie.

This dramatic moment took place in Turbo, Antioquia, Colombia, where volcanic activity is rare.

So far there have been no reports of serious injuries, but some locals are said to have fainted after the volcano's violent eruption. Some were treated for smoke inhalation and severe coughing.

About 109 families were affected by the eruption, many of whom fled their homes to protect themselves.

"There are some children with health problems due to smoke inhalation, these minors have been transferred to San Pedro hospital and we are taking action to take care of the entire population," said Alejandro Abuchar , the mayor of the area .

Experts from the Geological and Risk Management Agency are carrying out assessment work in the area.

The volcano erupted at around 5 p.m. local time on November 10.
