Toshiba delayed the release of the first HD DVD recorder

The company announced that the world's first HD DVD recorder will be delayed for two weeks for a technical reason.

Toshiba said the "delay" was extremely bad, because some parts didn't guarantee quality. In the meantime, they don't have enough replacement parts so that the product can be released in time.

The RD-A1 is a combination of HD DVD recorder with 1TB hard drive, can record and save up to 130 hours of high-definition video. This is Toshiba's highly anticipated weapon in its battle against rival Sony Corp and Blu-ray technology to dominate the new generation DVD market.

In fact, there are some HD DVD players on the market, but the RD-A1 is the first device that can both watch and record. Its expected retail price is 398,000 yen, equivalent to 3470 USD. Toshiba hopes they will sell 10,000 units by the end of the year.

Both HD DVD and Blu-ray can deliver video images with super sharp resolution and storage capacity many times higher than today's DVDs.

While Toshiba launched the HD DVD player in Japan last March, Sony plans to sell personal computers with Blu-ray drives starting later this month.
