Vietnamese Dr. 4 times was honored on the wall of the American Cancer Institute
Witnessing many heartbreaking scenes of cancer patients, Dr. Phan Minh Liem brings accumulated knowledge from the No. 1 Cancer Institute in the US back home with projects to help Vietnamese people prevent and treat cancer.
The boy was born in 1983 to choose cancer research when he was a student at the Department of Biotechnology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Natural Sciences. Graduated from university in 2005, Phan Minh Liem won a scholarship to the United States with his baggage as a wish to find ways to help patients win a dangerous disease which is an obsession "God calls anyone"
More than 10 years of hard work in the international environment, he was the first Vietnamese to be honored with four honors on the Anderson Institute's honor wall located in Houston, Texas. This is the number one Cancer Institute in the US, combining the effectiveness of training, research and treatment, treating over one million patients each year. Being able to study and work in this place is the dream of many anti-cancer doctors and scientists in the world. With a rigorous selection process, although there are thousands of professors and doctors working here, this place only recruits more than 50 students from many countries every year.

The mission of destroying cancer, the team led by Dr. Liem discovered a gene capable of effectively inhibiting the energy production of tumors. When this gene is activated, cancer cells will not get nutrients or will get nutrients but cannot convert into energy. This causes cancer cells to be destroyed or stopped growing, not metastasizing. According to initial test results, this method is effective for many types of cancer, especially malignant and metastatic cancer cells. This method opens up a new direction for future treatment in the hope of being able to effectively attack cancer cells without affecting much healthy cells.
Along with his colleagues, the doctor of Khanh Hoa village has a series of research projects published in prestigious international scientific journals on biotechnology and cancer. He also received prestigious awards, scholarships from the Ministry of Defense, the American Academy of Sciences and many organizations awarded. In the 74-year history since the Institute was founded, he was the first and only international student to be elected to the position of President of the Graduate Student Association.
"More and more people are suffering from cancer. Although treatment is improving, many years have not been as effective as expected. Seeing patients suffer painfully with tumors and effects The more you make me more motivated to work , " said the young doctor. His team is also developing new devices that combine nanotechnology and micro capillaries to detect cancer, infectious diseases and other diseases.
The path of career and fame in the United States is wide open but it is painful to help the homeland that he always aspires to return. His wife, who is studying for a doctorate in medicine at the University of Texas, is always close to sharing his wishes. Every time he visits his hometown, his wing is a pity when the rate of Vietnamese cancer increases rapidly and the hospital is always crowded with overload. Factors such as environmental pollution, aging population with many diseases, high chemical food, tobacco consumption, physical inactivity, sleep disorders . make cancer even more chances rife. Once infected, due to detection in the late stages, the treatment is very difficult with low success rate.
Since 2012, he is a bridge to contribute the leading professors at the Anderson Institute to Vietnam to attend talks, training courses to provide new knowledge about cancer for scientists, doctors, Vietnamese pharmacists and students, open up many opportunities for cooperation and training. He promoted the establishment of Vietnam Online Journal of Science, together with his associates, to participate in the advisory board of the Vietnam Education Foundation's Scholars . Helping everyone " Changing small habits can reduce the risk of cancer by two-thirds , ' he spends a lot of time talking to share his knowledge accumulated during the study.

In a passionate story, he is passionate about plans to help people prevent cancer. Although he struggled to maintain the two jobs, he was determined to come. This trip to Vietnam, he is developing scientific research results into useful products. Combining anti-cancer drugs and cancer prevention in food, drinking water from strictly verified food sources, he hopes to soon bring effective anti-cancer therapy to Vietnamese people.
At the Anderson Cancer Institute, patients with successful cancer treatment will be invited to a very formal ceremony. At that time, patients will use a wooden hammer to hit a gong at the hospital center to celebrate their achievements and a team of medical experts as well as encourage other patients in the process of treatment. . Because the cancer treatment process is often very painful with many side effects and requires extraordinary effort, it is really a battle and the disease winner is considered a hero. The path of cancer prevention is still a long way, it is this victory gong that has contributed to sustaining the motivation for scientists like Dr. Liem.
