Why are some people good at direction recognition?

Good navigation depends on many senses and brain cells, and reducing GPS use can also improve this ability.

What is geographical orientation?

The four main geographical directions are East, West, South, and North, often denoted by the first letters E, W, S, N (east, west, south, north, in English).

East and West are perpendicular (90 degrees) to South and North, with a 90-degree clockwise turn from North to East, and a 90-degree counterclockwise turn from North to West. In geography, these points are the cardinal directions of the compass, and maps (unless otherwise indicated) are usually shown with North at the top, South at the bottom, East on the right, and West on the left.

In addition to the four main directions, the compass also divides into four secondary directions (intermediate directions), including pairs of perpendicular directions, each direction lying in the middle of the main pairs of directions: Northeast (NE), Northwest (NW), Southeast (SE), Southwest (SW).

The 16-wind rose compass also divides into eight secondary directions as shown in the figure below, which are the shortest drawn directions. Each direction lies in the middle of the primary-secondary direction pairs: North Northeast (NNE), East Northeast (ENE), East Southeast (ESE), South Southeast (SSE), South Southwest (SSW), West Southwest (WSW), West Northwest (WNW), North Northwest (NNW).
