By new laser imaging technology, the researchers studied deep layers of the skin, measuring the extent of damage caused by sun exposure and aging. Images of collagen and elastin show that female skin loses elasticity faster than men.

Collagen is a group of proteins in the epidermis responsible for skin health. The human body produces a lot of collagen when young. But the amount of collagen decreases as you get older.

Currently, dermatologists who want to examine the patient's collagen network must take a tissue sample and watch it under a microscope. Meanwhile, researchers at Friedrich Schiller University, USA, want to understand collagen changes over time.

With new techniques, doctors can scan the epidermis with infrared rays without damaging the skin. Light pulses will stimulate the tissue in the epidermis to glow back. Collagen emits blue light, elastin is green. From there, scientists can measure the exact number of each factor.

On average, the amount of collagen, elastin and the appearance of the epidermis are related to the age of the patient and different by sex. Accordingly, women's skin is aging faster than men.

Researchers have identified this new method also can help find skin diseases that damage collagen and used to test anti-aging cosmetics.
