AMD launches next generation Opteron chips

AMD chip maker is expected today to release the next generation Opteron server chips with code-named

AMD chip maker is expected today to release the next generation Opteron server chips codenamed "Rev F".

AMD's move was analyzed by analysts as a new response to its competitor Intel after Intel launched its new Xeon server chip line.

The server chip line will take the official name of "Next-Generation Opterons" (next generation Opteron). Rev F has appeared in server products from manufacturers such as Sun Microsystems, HP, IBM and others.

The " Next-Generation Opterons " number still applies in the way of the Opteron chip. Next-Generation Opterons 1000 Series version for single-processor servers. Version 2000 Series for servers using two processors and 8000 Series for application servers from 8 or more processors.

The price of the " Next Generation Opteron " chip depends on the speed of operation. The slowest version will sell for $ 255, while the fastest speed version will cost 10 times - $ 2,649.

Besides, AMD also confirmed that the company has completed the design of the first quad-core chip product line. Expected quad core chip will officially appear in the middle of next year.

Features of "Rev F"

Rev F Opterons are dual-core chips with a maximum operating speed of 2.6GHz and Socket F. AMD has introduced this new virtualization and product line and accelerates memory.

Application AMD-V virtualization technology in Rev F will help servers start faster and more efficiently through multi-boot solutions at the same time.

Another significant change in the Rev F Opteron is that the chip has adopted the DDR2 memory technology version (Double Data Rate 2).

The Rev F chip has three different versions, including the high efficiency HE (energy saving) version, with a maximum power consumption of 68 watts, a normal version that consumes up to 95 watts and a special edition version. It takes up to 120 watts but is faster than other 200MHz versions. Both SE and HE versions are more expensive than the rest.
