Archaeologists found evidence of the people who built the ancient Stonehenge

Known as Blick Mead, the archaeological site was previously thought to be a relatively important Roman village. Recent excavations have provided evidence that it could in fact be a Neolithic settlement.

Researchers believe it may even be the first British city and its inhabitants may have built Stonehenge.

Professor David Jacques, head of the excavation project, said: 'At Blick Mead, we have found countless things. Until 2006, only 30 discoveries were recovered from this period, but now we have artifacts of more than 70,000 items. '

Many of these are stone tools that are thought to vary greatly in age, with the oldest dating back to around 10,000 years. This indicates that Blick Mead has been inhabited for a very long time, and it is a permanent settlement rather than a temporary camp. This information may even reshape our understanding of how humans lived during the Stone Age.

'We're talking about a very small area where people come and go but I think it could be a permanent settlement, so all our ideas about how the hunter-gatherers go. Transfers in distributed communities need to be revised , ' explains Jacques.

Although the site is located near a small stream, a few millennia ago, it was served by a large river, making it a great place to settle down.

Scientists also believe that the surrounding plains are inhabited by giant ancient cattle that provide many hunting opportunities.

The discovery of the skull and bones at Stonehenge itself has given greater weight to the theory that the inhabitants of Blick Mead may have built the famous famous emblem. In Blick Mead, archaeologists also discovered a 9-meter-high platform made from flint, used for religious ceremonies.
