In Hughes's new study, about 100 volunteers hear voices over tape, and independently evaluate them based on nine important characteristics in choosing a partner: ease, status, strength. health, honesty, intelligence, ability to marry, maturity, sexy and warm.

Participants often agree on what makes a voice so appealing. But when Hughes used a spectral image to analyze these voices according to different acoustic characteristics such as pitch, intensity ., she could not find a common feature that made these voices sound. interesting.

"We can agree on what makes an attractive voice, but I can't use a computer to do that," Hughes said.
