Australia supports Vietnam in responding to climate change

On August 23, in Hanoi, the Australian Embassy held a ceremony to announce Australian-funded projects for Vietnam to implement the Community-based Action Program to Respond to Climate Change.

Attending the ceremony were representatives of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, international non-profit organizations .

With an aid of AUD 15 million for 2.5 years, Australia's support program will help Vietnam cope with the impact of climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Australia will partner with 6 international organizations including the Australian Red Cross, CARE Australia, the Environmental Protection Fund, Oxfam Australia, Save the Children Australia and SNV Netherlands Development Organization, to coordinate with localities. Domestic and international organizations implement this program.

'Australia and our partners will help reduce disaster risks, increase food security and water resources for about 500,000 of the most vulnerable people' , Australia's plenipotentiary ambassador to Australia. Vietnam, Mr. Hugh Borrowman said.

Vietnam is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, especially in the Mekong Delta region, where sea level rise, saline intrusion and flooding have been affecting the people around here

Australia's support program in Vietnam will help strengthen the capacity of management officials as well as rice farmers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase rice production in the Mekong Delta and the region. Central. At the same time, the program also identifies practical steps in adapting to climate change from local experience and knowledge.

The program is part of the 'fast- track ' financial package of 599 million AUD that Australia committed for the period of 2010-2013 to help cope with global climate change, following the strong support of Australia for climate change adaptation activities of population communities in developing countries.
