Researchers have created two maps of air pollution levels, which indicate the concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), a byproduct produced in areas where air is polluted by car exhaust.
The map was made in various areas of the city of Montreal (Canada) between 1986 and 1996.
Later, the team found the home address of 383 menopausal women with breast cancer in 1996 - 1997 as well as 416 women with other types of cancer.
The results showed that the number of women living in areas with the highest NO 2 rates was nearly twice as high as that of the group living in areas with the lowest NO 2 .
There have also been a number of studies in the United States that suggest there may be a link between breast cancer and car smoke.
Particularly, the Canadian research group admitted that their work is still limited, so more research is needed before it can be concluded that NO 2 caused by car dust is one of the culprits. breast cancer.
