The tsunami-ravaged city of Sendai said it had contacted the Chinese ambassador about bringing pandas to the city's Yagiyama zoo. Japan said China had received a proposal to hire two pandas and was in the process of reviewing and waiting for approval from the authorities. The Japanese government said it would support the zoo if necessary.
