New frog species discovered in Borneo
This tiny frog has been named by scientists according to the plant species, Nepenthes ampullaria - one of the warmest species in Borneo. They lay eggs on either side of the pipe of the pitcher plant, and the tadpole grows thanks to the liquid accumulated inside the plant.
Adult male frogs range in size from 10.6 to 12.8mm, equivalent to the size of a pea. To discover this frog, scientists tracked the sound of male frogs, often gathered in and around the pitcher tree to call each other at sunset.
"The amphibians are very sensitive to changes in the environment, so we hope to distribute them ," said Dr. Robin Moore, a representative of the group of amphibian experts from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This will help to understand how changes in the global environment are affecting animals' .
Amphibians are currently the most threatened animal group, one-third of which are at risk of extinction. Amphibians are very important to humans, they control insects that spread disease and harm plants, helping to maintain a freshwater system.
