Intel gives a new name to the new generation of processors
Starting today (May 8), Intel will take the brand
Starting today (May 8), Intel will brand "Core 2 Duo" to name a series of laptop chips (laptops) and new-generation desktops.
Intel's new architecture, codenamed "Core", integrates two processors on a single chip, helping to deliver higher performance while consuming less power.
"Core 2 Duo" will replace the Pentium 4 brand used to call desktop chips; while "Core Duo" will be used to call laptop chips. The new chip, a "Conroe" codename for desktops, and a "Merom" codename for laptops, will be released in the third quarter of this year.
Intel also announced it would name "Core 2 Extreme" to call high-speed chips for gaming systems.
According to Intel executives, Conroe will deliver 40% better performance and consume 40% less energy than previous chips. Core 2 Duo is built on a new process that reduces the overall size of the chip. This will allow Intel to implant more transistors on each chip, thereby reducing production costs and increasing processing efficiency and saving energy.
