Yesterday (July 19), Intel said it would launch a "quad-core" chip for servers and desktops this year.

According to the previous plan, this type of Intel product is expected to launch next year. However, Intel CEO Paul Otellini said the company decided to change its plan to gain more competitive advantage against rival Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

" Intel wants to tell customers that we have decided to launch quad-core chips for the fourth quarter of this year instead of the plan to launch products in early 2007 as before ," Otellini said.

Intel's quad-core chip for server types will be codenamed Clovertown. The desktop product will be codenamed Kentsfield.

It can be said that in recent times, Intel has encountered many difficulties in business. But the company recently decided to reorganize it entirely in an effort to regain lost market share to competitors. The latest reform work that Intel has done is reducing 1,000 management positions across Intel units worldwide.

The more cores the processor has, the more capable they can handle the work than those with only one core. However, currently only server software is capable of utilizing multi-core processors. Most desktop software is not yet available.

Initially, Intel's quad-core chip will still follow its previous dual-core chip development path - ie the first product will be just a dual-core chip into one.

Meanwhile, AMD will only release similar chips in the middle of next year.
