Mozilla pulls the web application down to the PC

Mozilla said it is developing a new application capable of eliminating the line between online software and PC software. The software will be called Prism.

Prism can allow online applications on the web like Gmail to operate similarly to desktop software applications and without having to open a web browser. Prism is completely developed on the Firefox platform, so any web technology that supports Firefox can be compatible with Prism.

In addition to supporting common web technologies, Prism also allows web applications to use some desktop PC features such as offline storage directly on the hard drive or take advantage of the graphics hardware power. 3D.

Mozilla says Prism is not entirely a standalone application, but it wants to integrate it directly into Firefox. This means that if a Web user sees an online application and wants to run it on a desktop PC, they will need a few clicks to do so.

Initially Mozilla will build Prism for Windows first. Next comes the version for Mac OS X and Linux. 'Prism is one of the things we expect to help improve users' web application experience.'
