Noel Kempff Mercado National Park is located in the northeastern part of the province of Jose Miguel de Velasco, Bolivia, near the border with Brazil, separated by the river Rio de Itenez.
Noel Kempff Mercado National Park has an area of 750,000 hectares, most of which is Serania de Huanchaca mountain . Located in the transitional zone between the Amazon rainforest and the arid region, Noel Kempff Mercado National Park forms different habitats including: highland forest area, low forest area, submerged area water and flooded forest area.
The land that is now discovered by Noel Kempff Mercado National Park was first discovered in 1908 by explorer Percy Fawcett , but it was not discovered until 70 years later. In the 1970s, geologists of many organizations came to this area to survey and research. The adventure was attended by Noel Kempff Mercado - a famous biologist. After this land expedition, Noel Kempff Mercado realized the importance of this area and began building a campaign to protect it. Unfortunately, Noel Kempff Mercado was murdered by drug dealers and was unable to complete her work. His colleagues continued to carry out his unfinished work. By 1988, the Bolivian Government set up a national park reserve and named it Noel Kempff Mercado to commemorate his great contribution.
The Huanchaca highlands in the national park are between 600 and 900 meters above sea level. This mountainous area has areas of sandstone and quartz stone, geology of special type. The low land area covered by thick sediments is an ideal environment for many species of plants and animals to grow.

Reptiles in the park are also classified as one of the most diverse areas of reptiles not only by numbers but also by more than half of them being rare species such as: South American Tortoise, Red-footed Turtle, Brazilian giant tortoise, Caiman crocodile .
