Samsung Electronics has announced the successful development of a 3MP CMOS image sensor with a 1/4-inch lens for ultra-thin phone cameras.

The new image sensor allows a 30% reduction in lens size compared to CIS 3MP image sensors - regular 1/3-inch tubes. The exact size of the new sensor is 1.75 micrometers, while the size of 1/3-inch CIS lens sensors is 2.25 micrometers.

According to Samsung, despite its much smaller size, the image quality of the new sensor does not decrease compared to the 2.25-micrometer CIS sensor.
