Electronics firm Sharp has just become the latest victim in Sony's laptop battery that has a potential for fire.
Sharp announced it will recall and replace about 28,000 lithium-ion battery products used on its seven laptop product lines.
' Fortunately, these products are only sold on the domestic market, so it is easier for us to recover and replace batteries ,' said Hiroshi Takenami, a Sharp spokesman.
Meanwhile, Fujitsu announced it would recall about 51,000 more battery products used in its notebooks after it had been provided more information by Sony. Thus, the total amount of batteries recovered in this phase amounted to 338,000. Last week, Fujitsu announced the recall of 287,000 Sony battery products.
Toshiaki Koike, a Fujitsu spokesman, said that of the 338,000 products recalled this time, only 78,000 products were sold in the domestic market. The rest has been sold to the world market.
Thus, up to the middle of August, there have been 7.5 million laptop battery products manufactured by Sony.
Only Dell and Apple Computer announced the recall of the battery due to potential fire hazards, Sony estimated total damage would stand at $ 257 million. However, things have gotten worse as a series of other laptop manufacturers have also claimed to recall faulty battery products like Toshiba, Lenovo, Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, and Hitachi.
