An English student stuck abroad due to flight obsession, he is now permanently in the desert by acute fear of all forms of travel. Joe Thompson, 11, was hoping to return home by sea, road or rail, but he was afraid of any kind of transport.

This meant Tony, his father had to find another job in the Gulf state while his mother, Pauline, still had to stay at Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset, and could only visit her son during the holidays.

The latest defeat last weekend after they tried to leave Al Ain in UAE and hire a Jordan car, hoping to take a ferry to Haifa, Israel. However, the boy had a great panic and had to breathe on their drive home.

These symptoms were worse than the last four attempts when he could not board a plane for seven-hour flights to Heathrow airport, in recent weeks. However, one of Joe's hands became paralyzed and he could hardly breathe as he tried to enter the passenger seat for a 1,500-mile journey.

Every year Joe's mother only visited him on vacations.

Later, in order to save Joe's life, his father was forced to end his sentence home. Joe received the first round of treatment in Dubai for his fear and his 63-year-old father hoped this would help his son return home.

Joe's obsessive-flight syndrome has made the doctors confused but they will be more confused by his new fear with all forms of transportation.

Joe was afraid of most transportation.

'All the frustrations and constant discussions to bring him home have clearly disappointed him, and I don't want it to be hurt more,' Tony said.

Pauline, Joe's mother, said: "Joe is a sensitive boy and we need to be calm to find out why Joe cannot return to England. I look forward to this for a long time."
