Video: Thousands of starfish die massively on the Russian island
The cause of mass deaths of starfish may be due to environmental pollution or the impact of the big storm the night before.
Thousands of starfish suddenly died massively and drifted to a beach on Sakhalin Island near the Starodubskoe village in the Russian Far East, on November 1.
Dead sea stars are listed on the beach.
The cause of this phenomenon has not been clarified. According to researchers at Starodubskoe Marine and Marine Research Institute, these starfish died from a powerful storm the night before.
Starfish in Sakhalin Island waters live in depths of less than 5 meters. Therefore, they are susceptible to large waves caused by strong winds or storms.
However, many local people believe that the increasingly serious environmental pollution is the cause of the mass deaths of thousands of starfish in this area.
