The booming sales of the Wii game machine last Christmas pushed Nintendo's profits to 43%, the company's representative said.

Nintendo, which owns two other popular products, GameBoy Advance and Nintendo DS, recorded a record net profit of 131.9 billion yen ($ 1.1 billion) in the first 9 months of fiscal year 2006- 2007. It can be said that this is a clear growth rate compared to 92.2 billion yen of the same period last year.

In a press release, Nintendo said its revenue from April to December skyrocketed 73%, from 412.3 billion yen to 712.6 billion yen, or 5.9 billion USD.

This is an unbelievable success for many people, as the Wii has to deal with a formidable opponent: Sony's PlayStation 3. What's more, the Wii came out after nearly half a month.

However, Sony could only blame itself when it was powerless to increase production, leading to a serious scarcity of PS3 in the market in the last days of the year.

Expensive like hot cakes

So far, Nintendo has sold 3.19 million Wii units worldwide, with the US and Japan alone accounting for 2.39 million units. With this achievement, Nintendo affirmed that it is on the way to fulfill its target: 6 million units sold in the fiscal year 2006-2007 (March 31 closing date), out of a total of 7 million production machines out.

Earlier this month, giant Sony said it had shipped a total of 2 million PS3s worldwide and the company also targeted the 6 million PS3s on March 31. However, a major obstacle for Sony is that it failed to release PS3 in the European market before the end of the year.

Selling a lot of gaming machines has a particularly important meaning, because only the best-selling products attract software vendors to design more compelling games. The more games or support, the more the product will sell.

The first week, the Wii encountered a minor problem when the controller cord attached to the player's wrist made a mistake. Some victims slipped their hands, throwing the controller straight into the wall, the TV screen and even . their forehead. Even so, it can't stop the Wii from selling as expensive as hot cakes and Nintendo is free to get the money back.
