Archaeological excavations of ancient Hoi An port in Ha Tinh

University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Hanoi National University) in collaboration with Japanese archaeologists and Ha Tinh Provincial Museum organized excavation and discovery of ancient Hoi An port archeology ( belonging to Xuan Hoi commune, Nghi Xuan district, Ha Tinh province.

Archaeological delegation is conducting the excavation pits at the position of the ancient trading port of Hoi Thong in Xuan Hoi commune, Nghi Xuan district (Ha Tinh).
The survey team will organize excavations at two relics of Hoi Thong Communal House and Ca Temple in Xuan Hoi commune, Nghi Xuan district (Ha Tinh). The area for excavation is 20m 2 (Hoi Thong communal house is 10m2, the temple is 10m2). Excavation time from September 5 to September 15, 2016.
At this time, Vietnamese and Japanese archaeologists have conducted 4 excavation pits, each with a length of 2m, a width of 1m, a depth of 1.5m. The first excavation site is Con Boi, 500m away from the Temple of Ca Temple to the east, in the position of coordinates: 18 degrees, 44'16.6 "N; 105 degrees 46'14.7" E. The second place is the front of Hoi Thong communal house to the Northeast, with the coordinates: 18 degrees 44'30.5 "N 105 degrees 46'13.7" E.
Currently, archaeologists are carrying out the extraction of the earth layer above the excavation pits to conduct deep exploration under the cultural floors in search of artifacts. This process has revealed pieces of pottery, chinaware, and ancient porcelain on the surface of excavated pits.
According to Mr. Le Ba Hanh, Deputy Director of Ha Tinh Museum, Hoi Thong is an ancient trading port with an important role in the development history of the Vietnamese people during the Ly - Tran period.

This archaeological excavation aims to add material to the process of determining the size and role of the ancient trading port of Hoi An in the coastal maritime trading system in the North Central region of Vietnam. At the same time, study the role of the ancient trading port, including the seaport of Thong Thong and the trade relations between the two countries of Japan - Dai Viet in the process of historical development of the nation.
