Using probiotics, experts from the Institute of Biotechnology have helped farmers turn rice straw into humus for fertilizing fields. This method not only improves soil but also contributes to environmental protection.
Treating straw into humus and fertilizing fields
After each harvest, scattered on some fields in 5 districts of Nam Dinh province, there are straws covered with white nylon or covered with mud. These are not ordinary straw but straw treated with a biological product. With this preparation, after 17-25 days, the straw will become loose and become a very good fertilizer for the field. Fertilized before planting, the above fertilizers help reduce 20-30% of chemical fertilizers and increase crop yield by 5-7%.
The project, funded by the Department of Science and Technology of Nam Dinh province, started at the end of 2004, so far has been successfully implemented over 75 hectares of each crop in 5 districts of Xuan Truong, Nam Truc and Y Yen. , Vu Ban and My Loc. According to Dr. Tran Dinh Man, Deputy Director of the Institute of Biotechnology, the project not only helps farmers to maintain soil fertility but also solves this problem of pressing and polluting the environment.
If deployed on a large scale, when the above stack of straws will also be there will no longer smoke and smoke due to burning straw in the field. Throwing straw indiscriminately into canals due to too much straw will also be reduced.
In order to turn straw into humus, the team led by Associate Prof. Dr. Ly Kim Bang used a biological product produced by the Institute of Biotechnology. Powdered preparations containing 12-15 microorganisms isolated in Vietnam, including Bacillus strains, actinomycetes can produce different enzymes for decomposing organic matter in garbage and straw. In addition, there are some functional microorganisms such as antagonistic microorganisms with some diseases of plants, nitrogen fixing microorganisms, dissolved phosphorus microorganisms . that help plants grow easily. easier to absorb nutrients.
After the harvest, farmers collect straw in the corner of the field, mix inoculants with water and NPK fertilizer and then irrigate the straw. They then coated normal nylon on the straw to keep it moist or plastered. One pound of the product should be mixed with 1 kg of NPK and watered straw from one sao of rice. 1 ton of straw requires about 5 to 10 pounds of inoculant, depending on how long the farmer wants straw to be quick or slow. The price of inoculants is 13,000-15,000 VND / kg.
Dr. Man said that the project provided all preparations, supported nylon, and collected rice straw for farmers and technical training. However, later, when the benefits of this work were clearly seen, many farmers asked to buy inoculants. The technology of turning straw into humus and fertilizing the field has been completed and the preparation is commercialized. At the end of the project, the Institute of Biotechnology plans to transfer the inoculant production technology to Nam Dinh and expand the treatment technology to the South, where there is a lot of straw after each harvest.
