Resveratrol, a beneficial ingredient in red wine, may prevent breast cancer cells from developing by inhibiting estrogen's growth effect, a new study suggests. However, white wine does not have this effect in women, the Journal of Women's Health reported.

Researchers say white wine and other alcoholic beverages promote the conversion of androgens, increasing sex hormones and estrogen in the female body. This is one of the leading causes of breast cancer.

But red wine can prevent estrogen formation in women. It works like some drugs used to inhibit aromatase, preventing breast cancer recurrence.

Researchers at Cedars-Sinai's Medical Center said people who drank about 226ml of red wine a day had a significant change in seven sex hormones compared to those who drank the same amount of white wine. In addition, people who drink red wine, lower estrogen levels and androgen are higher than those who drink white wine.

In red wine, in addition to resveratrol, scientists also found grape phytochemicals to reduce cancer risk, hormonal balance and hormone regulation.
