The Japanese Navy saw smoke rising about 1000km south of Tokyo on November 20 and the coast guard then confirmed a new island was born around Ogasawara Islands. This is the first time Japan has seen this phenomenon after decades.

According to the Associated Press, JCG and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the island is about 200 meters in diameter, located off Nishinoshima island of Ogasawara Islands. The archipelago consists of 30 small islands, located 1,000km south of Tokyo.
