Apple recalled 1.8 million batteries manufactured by Sony

Yesterday, Apple announced it would recall 1.8 million batteries manufactured by Sony for use in Mac laptop products.

So, exactly 10 days after Dell announced its recall of more than 4 million batteries used in its notebooks - a battery manufactured by Sony - it was Apple. The main cause of this recall is that Sony batteries may be too hot and burn.

Sony has revealed that the cause of the problem for its lithium-ion battery is because the production line has left a certain amount of metal in the battery. Sony has worked hard to minimize or completely eliminate that amount of impurities. But it just started when there were some announcements about the case of Dell's laptop being on fire.

In a recall notice, Apple said it had received a total of five announcements about the lithium-ion battery being overheated during operation. In which two cases of battery fire caused some small damage to property.

Apple 's recalled batteries are products used in older notebooks. New products such as MacBooks and MacBook Pro are not included in battery recall.

The products recalled by Apple this time are 1.1 million chargeable reusable batteries used in iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4 products sold on the US market during the period from October 2003 to August 2006. Along with that 700,000 batteries used in similar Apple products are sold in the global market.

Most cases of recalled battery products are IBM PowerPC processor notebook products. And products using Intel chips like the MacBook and MacBook Pro are not included in battery recall.

Users of laptop products that are subject to Apple battery recall are advised to remove the battery and use AC power.

Apple recommends that customers should visit the company's website or call Apple's own free hotline for advice if their products are indeed subject to battery recall. If they are subject to revocation, they will be replaced completely free of charge.

Sony confirms the batteries sold to Dell and Apple with different configurations. In the latest statement, Sony confirmed that the case was too hot or very hot. It only happens when the condition is that the metal in the battery touches another part of the battery to form a closed circuit.

At the same time, Sony said the recall would cost an estimated $ 172 million to $ 278 million. Apple spokesman Steve Dowling said the recall would not affect its business results. Dell also made a similar statement.

Meanwhile, spokespersons of some other major computer manufacturers such as HP, Gateway and Lenovo expressed hope that there will be no problems with their products. Until now, all companies have no plans to recall batteries manufactured by Sony.
