China's Sinovel technology firm has just introduced the world's largest wind turbine that can be used to power offshore, onshore or inland.
Tao Gang, vice president of Sinovel, said it was the first type of turbine produced in the country. In the past, Germany was the only country that could independently manufacture the world's largest power turbine, and was the only country that had tested the device in a natural environment.
With 128m-diameter rotors, Sinovel 's turbines have a capacity of up to 6MW, larger than other turbines. According to Tao, the production of large domestic turbines will boost the development of the offshore wind power industry.
It is known that European countries and the United States are promoting the offshore energy industry because they want to save land resources and want to reduce gas emissions causing environmental pollution. Specifically, in the next decade, Britain and France plan to install 7,600 offshore turbines, each with a capacity of more than 5 MW.
In China, the first offshore wind turbine field with a capacity of 100 MW in HCMC. Shanghai started operating in August 2010.

Also in 2010, China completed the installation of a 1GW turbine field in northern Gansu province, which will be started in 2011. Currently, Sivovel is planning to build a 10MW turbine. .
Besides, other Chinese wind turbine producers are also developing large-capacity turbines by self-fabrication or joint ventures with foreign partners. Currently, China has 80 turbine manufacturers, of which the country's top turbines Sinovel, Goldwind and Dongfang Electric are among the top 10 turbine manufacturers in the world.
China's Wind Energy Commission said that by the end of 2010, China's total design capacity was the world's largest, with 44.7GW, accounting for 23% of the world's total wind power.
