Shocking new discovery about 10,000-year-old 'Eve' in England
Greta or England's Eve was once thought to be the oldest skull ever unearthed in England, considered an archaeological treasure throughout the decades.
Greta or England's Eve was once thought to be the oldest skull ever unearthed in England, considered an archaeological treasure throughout the decades. But a completely unexpected truth about her has just been revealed in new research.
According to Ancient Origins, the specimen was unearthed in 1943 and has been on display in the Burton upon Trent Museum for many years. When the museum closed, the specimen was preserved in a cabinet for the past 40 years. Originally, the specimen was thought to be up to 10,000 years old.
In 2019, the "Eve of England" was brought back to the world and put on solemn display in Stoke's Potaries museum, after freelance archaeologist David Ankins from Burton presented analyzes showing her 4,000 years older than previously thought, based on a mammoth tooth found at the burial site. Mammoths went extinct 14,000 years ago, so Greta must be at least 14,000 years old.
Mr. Adkins also analyzed the wound on Greta's skull - "Eve of England" and discovered her death must have been beheaded. This is based on comparative research with a series of decapitated skulls from Lake Motala (Sweden). So the preciousness of the skull is raised a notch because she could be the remaining evidence of a cruel ritual more than 10,000 years ago.
Recently, however, experts from Durham College, the University of Oxford and the Francis Crick Institute in London have studied Greta again. The results of dating through radiocarbon isotopes show that the "Eve of England" is actually only. 1,000 years old!
The discovery immediately rendered the earlier story of Greta a cross-century archaeological hoax . But according to the new team, the specimen is actually precious in a different way.
The final conclusion shows that the "Eve of England" was actually beheaded during the Norman Conquest of England in the 11th century. Thus, she still carries with her a special historical value.
