The Vietnam Military History Museum project was started in 2020, on a total area of 38.66 hectares. The project is located on Thang Long Avenue, Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi City. The project's main building has an area of more than 23,000 m2, in front of which are two 2,000 m2 lakes. In the middle of the square is the 45 m high Victory Tower, symbolizing the year 1945 the country gained independence.
The main exhibition space of the museum is a 35.8 m high building, including 4 aboveground floors and one semi-underground floor. Airplanes, tanks and many other large weapons obtained from the resistance wars, associated with many important historical events and figures, will be displayed in two areas next to the square, a total area of more than 20,000 square meters. m2.
The main building will be arranged into many display areas with themes based on space and historical progress.
The first floor includes 6 themes from ancient times, the resistance war against the French, the resistance war against the US and today. The 2nd floor displays 8 topics; 7 collections of weapons, military equipment and other artifacts. The 3rd floor includes artifacts from 12 military specialties such as Air Force, Navy, Special Forces, Artillery, Tanks - Armor, Engineers, Communications, Chemistry. The 4th floor is a multi-purpose house, Experience space, dining area.
MiG-21 aircraft number 4324 - one of the national treasures on display on the first floor of the museum. This is the aircraft that took part in combat to prevent attacks by the US Air Force in North Vietnam and shot down US aircraft 14 times.
The bottom floor of the main house is used as storage, technical administrative area, and working area for museum staff. This floor is also constructed with a 10,000 m2 storage warehouse with modern preservation standards.
One of the earliest artifacts brought to the museum was the MiG-21 fighter plane number 5121, piloted by hero Pham Tuan, who shot down a B-52 plane during the Dien Bien Phu campaign in the air on the night of November 27. December 1972. In addition, this MiG-21 also shot down four more American aircraft of all types when controlled by another pilot.
The milky white Renault Juvaquatre car, a historical "witness" during the 1968 Mau Than General Offensive and Uprising. Commando soldier Nguyen Tan Mieng used this car to transport liberation army soldiers from Ap Moi , Go Vap attacked the General Staff of the Saigon Army.
Self-propelled guns and tanks are displayed in the museum grounds. 175 mm self-propelled gun designed and manufactured by the US, known as Thunder - King of the battlefield, has a maximum speed on the road of 56 km/h, can fire up to 32 km, and has a damage area of nearly 1,000 m2. The shell weighs 68 kg and has a crew of 5 people. Vietnam captured 4 artillery pieces of this type in the Tan Lam battle, destroying artillery base 241 in Quang Tri in April 1972. This cannon was put on display at the Military Museum, now the Vietnam Military History Museum, in June 1974.

According to plan, the project will complete phase one in June, including the first floor display areas of the main building, square, memorial and auxiliary items such as children's play area and parking lot. It is expected that by the end of 2024, the project will be inaugurated, serving the domestic and international public.
According to the Project Management Board, when the museum comes into operation, it will be a cultural and information center about military history and military heritage of the army and the country. With a large and rich number of artifacts and information, the museum will meet the needs of learning, research, cultural enjoyment, and tourism of the people, armed forces, and international tourists. It is expected that this will also be a place to train and foster highly qualified staff in the museum field.
