Arman Sadeghpour said a natural cocoa extract in chocolate, tea and other products can effectively replace fluoride in toothpaste.

In fact, his research shows that cocoa extract is more effective than fluoride in fighting tooth decay. This extract, a white starch with a chemical composition like caffeine, helps to strengthen tooth enamel, thereby reducing the risk of tooth decay of users.

This new ingredient could lead to the first reform of toothpaste since manufacturers added fluoride to toothpaste in 1914.

Extracts have been proven effective in animals but still need 2-3 years before the product is given for human use, Sadeghpour said. But he created a sample toothpaste containing peppermint flavor, added cocoa extract to tooth decay and compared its effectiveness with fluoride on human enamel.
