On the first day of starting work after the Christmas and New Year holidays, netizens in Asia still had to cope with the situation of not fully ' recovering ' of the Internet connection. In response to this fact, Hong Kong telecom service providers are making every effort to overcome the problem as quickly as possible.

While the repair train is focused on resuming underground cable lines broken in Taiwan waters, every hour passes, Internet and telecom service providers must send to management agencies. OFTA's OFTA telecom provides up-to-date information on service quality status.

Mr. Ha Yung-kuen, OFTA's telecom director general, said: ' We have placed a permanent emergency warning system this morning (January 2), because today is the first day of the year. All schools and businesses start work after Christmas and New Year holidays . '

However, until noon 2/1, OFTA also received 20 notifications from Internet users. This small number proves that the quality of telecommunication services is not as bad as the initial concerns. And at the end of the working day, OFTA announced that the telecommunication network was operating smoothly, and no serious network congestion occurred.

Mr. Ha stated enthusiastically: ' The situation is much better than we thought '. According to him, Internet service providers have directed a lot of traffic through the terrestrial cable network to China and the satellite system.

On the other hand, activities such as international phone calls, mobile phone and fax services have returned to normal after a week of cable breakdown. Those cables transmit almost all of the communication data in the region and are also Hong Kong's international data transmission device. When 6/7 cables were broken, the Internet connection capacity was reduced by 70% compared to the normal level.

" Telecom service providers said they would prioritize companies firstly during working hours, which means that ordinary users will have to temporarily accept stagnation ." Mr. Ha urged people not to access foreign websites to maintain the transmission speed in the current situation.

Regarding the situation of troubleshooting, Mr. Ha said, a ship was present at the cable breaking area to repair the fiber optic cables of Hong Kong, another one had to temporarily seek shelter to repair the damage caused by large waves. Four more are on their way to the sea with a break of Internet fiber optic lines.

Mr. Ha said: ' As long as we can recover one of the 6 fiber optic cables that have been broken, it is possible to restore the status of international telecommunication traffic as it was in mid-December. The remaining cables will continue to be fixed until the end of this month . '
